(HINT: observe the behavior of a sucrose solution at 150\u00b0 C and at\u00a0 23\u00b0 C \u2014 but that&#8217;s not ALL you need!)\u00a0 Remember, information and explanations go in the Introduction.\u00a0 This is brief.<\/p>\n<p><b>Introduction:<\/b>\u00a0 Define the following terms in your introduction: sucrose, solution, saturated, supersaturated, crystallization.\u00a0 Remember, the reader has NO IDEA what any of these concepts are, or what you are going to investigate.\u00a0 A good test of your abstract and introduction would be to let a non-chemist read them and see if they can explain the experiment to you when they finish reading.\u00a0 The introduction will probably be several paragraphs.<\/p>\n<p><b>Materials:<\/b>\u00a0items with ** will be brought from home by each lab group. (you may store them in the back room)<\/p>\n<table border=\"2\" width=\"100%\" cellpadding=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr align=\"left\" valign=\"top\">\n<td align=\"left\" valign=\"top\">\n<h2>*Equipment<\/h2>\n<p>Goggles, apron<br \/>\n*1\u00a0 1-lb. coffee can<br \/>\n*1\u00a0 stirring utensil (old spoon with long handle)<br \/>\nMeter stick<br \/>\nBunsen burner or hot plate<br \/>\nRing stand and ring clamp<br \/>\nWire gauze *(reduces scorching)<br \/>\nThermometer<br \/>\nWaxed paper\u00a0 (approx. 100 cm.)<br \/>\nBeaker tongs<br \/>\nBaggie (if you want to take the product home)<\/td>\n<td>\n<h2>Chemicals<\/h2>\n<p>142 mL. tap water<br \/>\n*248 mL. sucrose<br \/>\n*110 mL. liquid dextrose<br \/>\n*approx. 15 mL. margarine<br \/>\n2 drops food coloring<br \/>\n*3 mL extract OR 6-10\u00a0 mL. flavoring<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><b>PRELAB:\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0Prepare a chemical data table for water, sucrose, and dextrose. Read the questions and prepare a table for all of your observations.\u00a0 Be sure it is easy to read.<\/p>\n<p><b>Procedure:\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***DO NOT MESS AROUND! COOKING TIME CAN BE LENGTHY!!<\/span><br \/>\n1. Put on goggles and aprons.<br \/>\n2. Measure sucrose into coffee can.<br \/>\n3. Measure liquid dextrose and add to sucrose.<br \/>\n4. Measure water in beaker. Swirl gently to remove all traces of dextrose from the beaker, then add to<br \/>\ndextrose and sucrose.<br \/>\n5.\u00a0 Measure 8 mL of margarine and add to mixture.\u00a0 Stir.\u00a0 Does the sucrose dissolve completely? Does the<br \/>\nlubricant mix with the water? RECORD YOUR OBSERVATIONS.<br \/>\n6. Heat mixture CAREFULLY over Bunsen burner until it boils,\u00a0 stirring constantly, until it reaches<br \/>\n149\u00b0C. CAUTION: THIS IS VERY HOT!\u00a0 Meanwhile, spread a very thin film of margarine on a 100 cm. length<br \/>\nof waxed paper.<br \/>\n7. When mixture reaches 149\u00b0C, remove from heat and allow to cool to about 125\u00b0 C. Add food coloring and<br \/>\nflavoring, stirring until well mixed. Pour onto waxed paper. Spread the mixture in a layer 1-1.25 mm.<br \/>\nthick.\u00a0 Record observations of physical state before and after cooling.<br \/>\n8. CLEAN UP while waiting for product to cool.\u00a0 *No credit will be given for lab until your work area has<br \/>\nbeen inspected.<\/p>\n<p><b>QUESTIONS:\u00a0<\/b>Answer in complete sentences that include the question.<br \/>\n1. Describe what you saw as the solution heated.<br \/>\n2. At about what temperature was all of the solute dissolved?<br \/>\n3. What do you think would happen if you heated the mixture only to 100\u00b0C?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To 190\u00b0C?<br \/>\n4. Water boils at 100\u00b0C. When it reaches that temperature, it turns to steam but the temperature does not<br \/>\nincrease.\u00a0 This solution contains water, yet its temperature rose to 160\u00b0C. How could you explain this?<br \/>\n5.\u00a0 At what point in the procedure was the solution supersaturated?<br \/>\n6.
